LANGUAGE BEFORE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Long before the term political correctness had any meaning there was a richness to riposte sadly lacking in today’s vernacular. Those in the public eye often captured the headlines with a sneering wisecrack at an opponent. Newspaper editors too risked their readers’ wrath with an occasional derisive comeback.

Lord Sandwich was scathing when he scornfully addressed John Wilkes, editor of The North Briton: ‘Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of the pox.’ The newsman retorted: ‘That depends, sir, on whether I embrace your politics or your mistress.’

This exchange has wrongly been accredited to Gladstone and Disraeli. It was a time when the English language was an art-form; when people could communicate with richness.

‘If you were my husband I would give you poison,’ sneered Lady Astor to Winston Churchill. ‘If you were my wife I would take it,’ he answered back.

Insulting witticisms must include Clarence Darrow’s: ‘I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.’

If you think red-top tabloid crassness is a recent phenomenon reflect on William Faulkner’s take on Ernest Hemingway’s writings: ‘He has never been known to use a word that might send the reader to a dictionary.’ The war correspondent’s retort was to the point: ‘Does he really think that big emotions come from big words?’

Pity the wretched author who received a memo from Moses Hadas. ‘Thank you for sending me a copy of your book. I’ll waste no time reading it.’

Mark Twain, renowned for his sharp wit, once said; ‘I didn’t attend the funeral but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.’

Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw loathed Winston Churchill. Aware that his corpulent foe was better known for his toadies than for genuine friends, he wrote: ‘I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play. Bring a friend, if you have one.’ Winston replied, ‘Cannot possibly attend the first night, will attend second, if there is one.’

Any in a misplaced relationship may take heart from Stephen Bishop’s remark: ‘I feel so miserable without you. It is almost like having you here.’ Equally sardonic the opinion of Irvin S. Cobb: ‘I have just heard about his illness. Let us hope it is nothing trivial’. The playwright Oscar Wilde was famous for his wit: ‘Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.’

This brings us to the thereafter which prompted Jack E. Leonard to surmise; ‘There’s nothing wrong with you that reincarnation won’t cure.’

Thomas Brackett Reed might easily have been talking of today’s celebrities when he said, ‘They never open their mouths without subtracting from the sum of human knowledge.’ As for enthusiasts of pop music Billy Wilder spoke for many: ‘He has van Gogh’s ear for music.’

Enugu Palm in colour

Never forgotten was the drama as the Palm Line freighter Enugu Palm after finally answering the wheel skimmed by a metre or two a row of ocean-going freighters moored at the port’s quays. A second’s delay on the part of Captain Inés would have led to one of the worst shipping disasters in African history.

Had it not been for the quick thinking of the skipper several freighters moored at the Ivory’s Coast Port of Abidjan would have been devastated.

Enugo Palm at dock

Palm Line, a British-owned shipping company, plied 5,000 miles West Africa’s seaboard. In the early 1960s, the company’s commodore was Spanish Captain Inés, whose hands-on character was legendary. He never suffered fools so I got on perfectly well with him.

Palm Line vessels were specially designed to negotiate the sand bars of the African creeks that otherwise excluded entry to liners that might otherwise bring trade to communities located to the Dark continent’s interior.

Ibadan Palm deck cargo

The Port of Abidjan on the Ivory Coast, however, is a modern port. Having picked up the pilot at the port’s approaches, Captain Inés, in accordance with the protocol, surrendered control of the Enugu Palm to the pilot. The local pilot’s knowledge of the port is essential for safe mooring.

On this occasion, it soon became self-evident that all was not quite right. The recently boarded pilot was blind drunk and quite incapable of riding a bicycle let alone a fast-moving ocean liner in the narrow confines of a port.

Enugo Palm

The Enugu Palm did successfully negotiate the port’s Vridi Canal without colliding with its palm thronged banks. As an 18-year-old Ordinary Seaman standing at the ship’s wheel I was best placed to see the unfolding drama as the pilot inexplicably instructed the engine room to full ahead. After all, we were now approaching a lengthy quay along which several freighters were moored.

African creeks

Riveted, I watched the expression of growing alarm on the face of Captain Inés. Racing at full speed, about 25 kilometres per hour, the Enugu Palm’s bow was clearly destined to cleave the nearest moored freighter in two. I must have been the only British sailor ever to witness a port pilot being roughly cursed and physically shouldered aside as a ship’s captain resumed control of his doomed laden ship.

Rushing to the telegraph, bells clanged alarmingly as Captain Inés swung the lever to Full Astern. Simultaneously, he ordered me to swing the wheel hard to port. The rest was down to fate. Unlike a car, a ship can travel a long way before it responds to a change of command.

IS GREAT MUSIC THE WORK OF DIVINITY OR COMPOSERS

Many great European musicians believed that they were merely copyists for a Divine Spirit. Arguably the greatest musician of all, Ludwig van Beethoven refused to take credit for his music. For those of a mystical frame of mind, there is much to ponder on. How do you describe something you cannot see? How did Beethoven create the most beautiful orchestrations of his music whilst unable to hear?

Beethoven’s passing in 1827 is threaded with mystery. As the Reaper embraced this shabbily dressed irascible genius there broke over the Viennese night the most violent and terrifying electrical storm. The city cowered as thunder and lightning split the heavens. Beethoven, lying semi-conscious on his bed, was heard to murmur, ‘I shall hear in Heaven’. The great master raised his arm as though to salute and departed. As his soul departed, the storm immediately began to abate.

Great Europeans

His funeral cortège brought Vienna to a halt. Schools and businesses closed and upwards of 30,000 people lined the streets to pay homage. Among the throngs was the great Franz Schubert who was to follow the great master to the grave just 12-months later.

The renowned Irish flautist James Galway is adamant that the edge to his virtuosity is sharpened by God’s guidance. When discussing his ambitions Galway agreed that they were limited: ‘They are merely that I should leave good memories behind me; that people should feel when they recall my name, that in some odd inexplicable way, they have at some time heard the voice of the Infinite through me.’

Mozart

Ludwig van Beethoven was just twelve years old when his virtuosity inspired his kindly mentor, Christian Gottlob Neefe, to present the talented child to the Elector of Cologne, Maximilian Franz: ‘He is, I believe, touched with genius.’

‘Quite a word to use of one so young,’ said the Elector: ‘You must not let this go to your head, young man,’ he added looking directly at Ludwig.

Ludwig spoke in a firm, clear voice: ‘Sir. I have a gift that people say comes from God. I believe that to be true.’

The tremendous storm that consumed Vienna at the time of Beethoven’s spirit readying itself to leave his life-form may be dismissed as coincidence. Yet a similar freak of Nature occurred as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s hearse trundled to his final resting place:

‘The hearse, with the few mourners, then proceeded to St Mark’s churchyard, but before the burial place was reached a terrific storm of snow and rain burst overhead, and with one accord the mourners turned back and left the hearse to proceed alone.

And thus the master, of whom it was prophesied that he would cause all others (composers) to be forgotten, was left to be buried by the hands of strangers in a pauper’s grave, without even a stone to mark where he was laid,’ wrote Francis Jameson Rowbotham.

When Beethoven arrived in Vienna for the first time, he looked forward to meeting yet another great musician; Wolfgang Mozart. Music, he thought, the highest art, coming directly from God. How many men have such a calling?

‘Mozart makes you believe in God, much more than going to Church, because it cannot be by chance that such a phenomenon arrives into this world and then passes after thirty-six years, leaving behind such an unbounded number of unparalleled masterpieces,’ says Sir Georg Solti, Classical Conductor.

‘It is already a great thing if the main ideas and general outline of work come without any racking of brains, as the result of that supernatural and inexplicable the force we call inspiration.’ ~ Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

‘The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.’  ~ Johann Sebastian Bach 21 III 1685 – 28 VII 1750.

musicprogram

‘Supreme serenity still remains the Ideal of great Art. The shapes and transitory forms of life are but stages toward this Ideal, which Christ’s religion illuminates with His divine light. I did not compose my work as one might put on a church vestment. Rather it sprung from the truly fervent faith of my heart, such as I have felt it since my childhood.’ ~ Franz Liszt. Artur Schnabel

Described Franz Schubert as ‘the composer nearest to God.’ Beethoven evidently agreed: ‘Truly, the spark of Divine genius resides in this Schubert.’

Half an hour before he died he (Dinu Lipatti) was listening to records of Beethoven’s F minor Quartet. To his wife, he said: ‘You see, it is not enough to be a great composer. To write music like that you must be a chosen instrument of God.’

‘It seems as though God gave me a cheerful heart, so I’m sure He’ll forgive me if I serve Him cheerfully. Whenever I think of God I can only conceive of Him as a being infinitely great and infinitely good. This last quality of the divine nature inspires me with such confidence and joy that I could have written even a Miserere in tempo allegro.’ Joseph Haydn

Giacomo Puccini: ‘God touched me with his finger and said ‘write for the theatre, mind you – only for the theatre’… and I’ve been faithful to this supreme command.’

On composing Messiah, (Georg) Handel is said to have remarked (1741): ‘I did think I did see all Heaven before me and the great God Himself.’ On another occasion, Handel whilst writing the Messiah, when speaking to a servant at the hotel in which he was staying: ‘Once he had finished the hallelujah chorus he spoke to the servant, ‘the Lord spoke to me and hath said ‘Twas not I who wrote this but on accord of Him. Whether I was in my body or out of my body as I wrote it I know not. God knows.’

wagner

Richard Wagner, the doyen of the anti-Globalist (Bolshevik) worldwide community: ‘I am being used as an instrument for something higher than my own warrants. I am in the hands of the Immortal Genius I serve for the span of my life and his intention that I complete only what I can achieve.’

Wagner on another occasion: ‘An atheistic upbringing is fatal. No atheist has ever created anything of great and lasting value.’

‘How do you think of those lovely melodies?’ asked a female admirer of Charles Gounod: The master replied: ‘God, Madame, sends me down some of his angels and they whisper sweet melodies in my ear.’

Brahms

Johannes Brahms, ‘I know several young composers who are atheists. I have read their scores, and I assure you, Joseph, that they are doomed to speedy oblivion because they are utterly lacking in inspiration. Their works are purely cerebral. No atheist has ever been or ever will be a great composer.’

Walter Legge, the impresario was later to remark of Dinu Lipatti: ‘by the same light we may say it is not enough to be a great pianist: To play as Dinu Lipatti played you must be a chosen instrument of God. God lent the world His chosen instrument that we called Dini Lipatti for too brief a space.’

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, the renowned Italian Classical Pianist: ‘I’m nothing but a priest of god’s music.’

‘Life was a much-uncomplicated thing to him. Instead of turmoil or neuroticism or dark brooding, we encounter simple and sincere piety, such as only the deeply religious man is capable of,’ was a writer’s observation of Antonin Dvorak Czech composer.

‘That (Anton) Bruckner felt inspired by God is to state the obvious. In addition to the vocal religious works, he dedicated his 9th Symphony ‘To our Beloved God’ (although it’s said that he modestly appended ‘if He’ll accept it’).

cultura-antob-bruckner1896

Anton Bruckner did make it clear that he also considered his view of the Day of Judgement as part of his perspective.

‘They want me to write differently. Certainly, I could, but I must not. God has chosen me from thousands and given me, of all people, this talent. It is to Him that I must give account. How then would I stand there before Almighty God, if I followed the others and not Him?’ – Anton Bruckner.

Mireille Mathieu, the vestal virgin of popular music, throughout her life believed she worked with Our Lord. Her motto was, ‘My God and my Work’.

Amália Rodrigues

Amalia Rodriguez was an international singing sensation in the mid-20th Century: ‘Even if He doesn’t exist, I believe in Him.’

Her words were echoed more or less by many others, including Placido Domingo, the greatest of contemporary tenors: ‘I thank God, music and the public for making this possible.’

‘The greatest classical Spanish guitarist of all time, Andres Segovia had said of (John) Williams: ‘A Prince of the Guitar has arrived in the musical world. God has laid a finger on his brow, and it will not be long before his name becomes a byword in England and abroad, thus contributing to the spiritual domain of his race.’

86613135-3c5a-4f7d-8891-add5506d2069

When asked where his talent came from, Herbert von Karajan, the Austrian-German musician and conductor was forthright: ‘I was given special tools, special talents. I never had any doubts that my talents came from the Creator. My duty to Him is to exploit them to the fullest. My ambition is to make music as perfectly as possible and reach as many people as possible.

You don’t need faith to believe in God, because there are plenty of signs available of His existence. Mozart wrote a symphony as a child. Heredity cannot account for this. There is only one explanation: the Creator chooses people as His instruments to produce some beauty in a world that is all too ugly.

‘We see and hear him now (von Karajan) at the height of his powers, superbly able to keep a Bruckner symphony spinning not like a top but rather like some celestial sphere, massive, glowing, and infused with cosmic power,’ wrote Denis Stevens describing the final von Karajan recording of Bruckner’s 7th Symphony in April 1989. The maestro of maestros passed peacefully on three months later.

A REVOLUTION IN ROMANTIC STORYTELLING

Having rediscovered his gift for storytelling, Michael Walsh was struck by the thought that like pop music, storylines in novels had become unoriginal. It appeared that TV soaps, television drama and novels had one unimaginative strategy to boost sales.

Their solution was to dish up a tasteless ménage of mixed race sex, abortion, suicide, murder, and to use degeneracy to cause shock and awe for vapid viewers and readers

Clearly, there was a need for change.  The challenge was taken up by Michael Walsh. Already the author of a varied range of over 60 book titles, the novelist’s aim was to pen a novel that whilst being an easy and enjoyable read would also break taboos.

Despite an aura of permissiveness and degeneracy pervading the book world, there are still romantic topics that remain unexplored. The difficulty was to do so in a tasteful and romantic way whilst challenging convention.

There was then one last redoubt to conquer. This was surprising and it must be said the shock end to the romantic drama.

The master storyteller, having achieved success with his Leopard in LiverpoolThe Stigma Enigma and The Dovetails novels, was now set to enter into and travel into the world of taboo romance and the paranormal.

Follow the chapters if you dare to enquire into the impact the paranormal has on affairs of the heart including your own. The Souls Meet will challenge your beliefs in the world of spirits and past lives. Have you lived before?  Will you live again and again? The Souls Meet is a highly readable and stimulating novel that will certainly push back the frontiers of romanticism and morality.

The Souls Meet is described as a book to be read with closed eyes and an open mind. For the reader, there must be a willingness to realign the morality of romantic relationships excluding none.

The privileged page-turning reader of this semi-fictional novel will eventually reach the final chapters of The Souls Meet and in particular the last revealing disclosures. Here, the startling message on the tombstone will shock the reader.

For this reason, the author at the outset places a hex on any who reveal the secret of the tomb to those yet to read The Souls Meet. This astonishing novel may well prove to be a revolution in English-Irish literature.

Whilst the author welcomes buyer reviews, he begs those who are kind enough to do so to avoid revealing too much about the storyline and not to divulge the secret of the book’s ending.

THE SOULS MEET Michael Walsh. The award-winning author Michael Walsh enjoys a worldwide reputation as a writer, journalist and historian. A world-traveller, for many he has become a guru of change and challenge.

THE DECK BOY WHO SAVED A SUPER LINER

At regular intervals, all vessels are placed in Dry Dock where they are thoroughly examined and repaired before being licensed to return to the high seas. The great ocean liners were no exception. The then 16-year-old Michael Walsh was one of the skeleton crew left to man the RMS Britannic during its repair and renovation in north Liverpool’s Dry Dock.

The repairs may last a week or so during which time, especially at night, there is little or no human activity. The writer later recalled that there were just several quartermasters deployed to act as a fire party. ‘I had been tasked with being the liner’s watchman and was to be positioned in the great liner’s wheelhouse.

8

Back then, I was still wet behind the ears deck boy and I had volunteered for this night-watchman’s job. The watch duty began at about 6 p.m. and didn’t finish until 8 am the following morning so it was a soul-destroying but well-paid duty. All one could do during the night watch was read a book and maybe catch a little shuteye whilst stretched out on a ship’s deckchair.

The RMS Britannic was the last of the White Star Shipping Company liners. This was the company that had once owned the luckless RMS Titanic. Built-in 1930, the Britannic featured much that would be familiar to the great passenger liners like the Olympic and Titanic. The deckchairs hadn’t changed since that period.

Britannic at Pier Head

‘During my brief instruction, I learned the ropes relating to the watchman’s duties. Having shown me the various alarms, handles, switches and lights, the officer of the watch then took me across the great liner’s wheelhouse to where there was located a glass cabinet set in the wheelhouse bulkhead.

The cabinet looked very much like one of those museum display cabinets that hold and display artefacts. However, this wheelhouse cabinet differed in that the bottom was lined by about 30 small pipe ends. Think of 2’ of a vacuum cleaner pipe and you have the picture.

7

The system like most clever ideas is simple.  Each pipe led to a different section of the great liner, a hold, storeroom, workshop, or a utility room. In the event of a fire breaking out the smoke would be vacuumed up along the pipe to emerge in the wheelhouse glass cabinet whereupon the fumes would set off the alarm. The number inscribed on each pipe would indicate the room affected.

The officer was blasé about this part of the instruction and seemed to me to be going through the motions only. With that, I was left to my own devices. It was admittedly lonely. On the ship’s bridge and confined to the wheelhouse, I was far from any human activity. I had no idea where the ship’s officer would be. The four or so ship’s quartermasters were ten minutes of ladders, walkways, staircases and alleys distant.

Each night watch passed uneventfully until during the early hours of one morning the alarm in the wheelhouse cabinet sounded. A false alarm I suspected. When I reached the cabinet, I stood horrified as I watched black smoke pouring from one of the pipes. Ours is not to reason why ours is but to do and die. As earlier instructed, I ran from one alarm to another, pulling levers, pressing buttons, raising and lowering handles.

One is totally unprepared for the bedlam that follows. Every damned light on the darkened liner came on. Simultaneously, the great ship’s whistles on its funnel continually blasted their whistles. These ship’s whistles could be heard six miles away.

6

One could barely hear oneself speak to the backdrop of clanging ship’s bells. Far below in the liners corridors the watertight doors, far heavier than most bank vault doors, were slamming shut. The darkened liner immediately lit up like Blackpool promenade at the height of season but with far greater effect and noise.

Unsurprisingly, the officer of the watch came through the wheelhouse door like fucking batman on steroids. With the glazed-eye look of an unhinged madman, his eyes rolling and his mouth soundlessly mouthing, I gathered he was saying something along the lines of, ‘what the freaking hell have you done, you half-witted little bastard.’

I was by now aware of the noisy arrival of fleets of fire engines called from all over Liverpool. Stretched along the dock’s quays were already fire appliances, their bells ringing, blue lights were flashing, and hoses were already being laid out?

Unable to utter a word, I jabbed my finger in the direction of the see-all smell-all ‘go and fuck yourself’ glass cabinet. Only then did the ship’s officer realise the seriousness of the situation.

10

The cause of the shipboard fire was later revealed.  Welders, working deep down in the ship’s bowels near the bows had unwittingly allowed sparks to settle in old burlap sacking. The effects of the slow burn had taken a period of time. The welders, their day finished had gone home. Only much later in the evening did the smouldering burlap sacking burst into flames enough to cause the smoke that was to set off the alarm.

Britannic

The incident reminded us all of a similar fire that precisely six years earlier in 1953 had gutted and capsized another great ocean liner in the nearby Gladstone Dock. Then, the Canadian Pacific Railways Atlantic liner, Empress of Canada, at 20,000 tons smaller than the 27,000 ton Britannic, had been destroyed in a similar situation. Did I receive an award, frankly no, not even a ‘well done, lad’ and a handshake. Such is the reward of duty.

A PREDATOR PROWLS IN SEARCH OF HIS PRESS-GANGED DAUGHTER

Michael Walsh, historian, and journalist, never found enough time to be a novelist until during the 1990s when, down to his last brass cent, he wondered if salvation might come via a novel. The dissident journalist put pen to paper and began work on Retribution which later was re-titled A Leopard in LiverpoolThe novel was finally published a year or so ago and was accompanied by a low-key promotion.

The established writer already had a worldwide reputation as a historian-author. He knew the plot had to tick all the boxes and most important the story-line had to be believable. The only way to achieve this was to write a novel that draws on his first-hand experience. In many respects, A Leopard in Liverpool is painfully biographical. The reader will feel the skin prickle as he or she turns the pages.

The novel is based on a mercenary’s planned vacation in his native Liverpool. His break goes downhill when during a chance meeting with a former girlfriend he learns that his adolescent daughter, whom he was unaware of, is ensnared by the maritime city’s lowlife. This was an epic fail on the part of those who abducted the teen.

After being drawn into the 1960s Congo crisis and Simba Rebellion Liverpool seaman, Fraser McLeod morphed into a lethal humanoid. The leopard in the book’s title was the insignia of Commando Kansimba, otherwise known as the Leopard Battalion under the command of the legendary Colonel Jean ‘Black Jack’ Schramme.

Jean “Black Jack” Schramme (March 25, 1929, Bruges, Belgium – December 14, 1988, Rondonópolis, Brazil) was a Belgian mercenary and planter.

Years spent in Rhodesia’s anti-insurgency bush wars served to turn the dog-of-war into a cunning and resourceful predator. Camouflaged by the inner-city nomadic community, his pubescent daughter’s trail has by now gone cold. The action heats up when the merciless Fraser McLeod with hate in his dark heart disappears into the maritime city’s social sewers.

Those, whose trade is debt and death, flesh and illegal substances know how to discourage the inquisitive. Yet, they are no match for a prowling marauder for whom death is no more to be feared than is birth. The soldier-of-fortune turned arms dealer has a single lead and an unquenchable thirst for a vengeful nemesis.

Readers of A Leopard in Liverpool will be much reminded of the Brian Garfield novel, Death Wish. The movie of the same title tells the story of Paul Kersey, a Manhattan architect, who became famous, or infamous for pedestrian vigilantism.

collage leopard with captions -7

Parallels will also be drawn on the 1978 soldier of fortune Daniel Carney epic, The Wild Geese. When the film was made it became an iconic movie that allows us a peek into the world of the notorious dogs-of-war.

A Leopard in Liverpool makes Death Wish and The Wild Geese into a hot trilogy of drama, suspense, and brutal pedestrian vigilantism. Was Michael the man for the job? You decide but rest assured that much of the book is indeed biographical.  A Leopard in Liverpool skilfully combines real life with, well, you decide, is this saga all real life or not.

A LEOPARD IN LIVERPOOL Michael Walsh attracts worldwide rave reviews: An American buyer: ‘Mr Walsh takes the reader on a journey through the seedier side of an English city, along with a nice dose of an African bush war. The story line is very relevant to what is going on in society today. The story is believable and well told.’

Another writes, ‘An excellent thriller written in the tense style of a John Le Carre novel.’ A German reviewer says; ‘Well written story about an ex-mercenary using his skills of investigation and cunning to help a daughter he had not previously known about. Set in the underworld of Liverpool I found it very difficult to stop reading until I had finished the book.’
